Arthur McBride - trad, arranged by Paul Brady (guitar part, rough cover)
This is my attempt at Paul Brady's arrangement of Arthur McBride. I've probably got it wrong, but it sounds quite good to me, though I'm sure someone will be able to explain why it was in my Rejects folder.
The guitar is tuned to Open G and I refuse to insult anyone by attempting to sing it, to my mind, some songs are definitely reserved to certain people who know what they're singing about. I promise to also spare you from Bluegrass, trucker songs, except perhaps Tom Wait's version of Phantom 309 if I can build up the courage, and Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town - even though I love the song.

If I Could Read Your Mind - Gordon Lightfoot (cover)
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.10 лет назад
Copyright for the tune and lyrics held by those who have the rights to Gordon Lightfoot's repertoire. I do not hold the rights. I can only claim to have sung, played and recorded it. An attempt at this classic by the great Gordon Lightfoot. Canada really has produced some wonderful songwriters for Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Stan Rogers and many many other. I've always like Gordon...
Dives and Lazarus - traditional arr. Nic Jones (cover)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.10 лет назад
I'm not sure why I took this one down, but here it is back up again. This is my attempt at Nic Jones's arrangement of Child Ballad 56 Dives and Lazarus. I think the tune is a variation by Ralph Vaughn Williams of the original tune, but honestly not sure. I think the guitar is tuned to Open C minor. I fluff up the lyrics slightly at the end, but .... It's rather complicated by the fact that the ...
Golden Girl - John Martyn (cover)
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.10 лет назад
The copyrights to this song and tune are held by John Martyn's publishing company. I have not uploaded anything from John's original recording. Guitar and vocal by myself. An attempt at John Martyn's Golden Girl from London Conversation - his first album. Not sure when I recorded this, but it was quite a while ago. Can't find it on my channel so I thought I'd post it.
Wedding Dress - Pentangle/traditional - possible guitar part
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.11 лет назад
This is just an attempt at helping someone out. A request for the chords for the traditional song Wedding Dress as done by Pentangle. I don't know if I didn't get lost somewhere and running into Omie Wise along the way. The trouble with this one is that Bert's playing on banjo and there's not much of a view of what John's doing on videos of this. Chords are basically Am and G with the capo on 5...
From Clare To Here - Ralph McTell (cover)
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.11 лет назад
My attempt at Ralph McTell's From Clare To Here. I've got the capo on 2 but I'm probably tuned down a step from concert pitch. One of those songs I've been meaning to record for awhile.
Carnival - Sandy Denny - demo (cover)
Просмотров 81311 лет назад
This is my attempt at Sandy Denny's first demo version of Carnival from Sandy Denny: the Notes and the Words. There are two distinct versions of this song: this demo version which I've tried to cover, although Sandy actually plays it on a 12-string, and the "finished" which was released in 1973 on the album Like An Old-fashioned Waltz. I find there's something really refreshing hearing Sandy's ...
Wretched Wilbur - Sandy Denny (cover)
Просмотров 79911 лет назад
I do not hold the rights to either the lyrics or the tune of this song. My only intention in posting it is the hope that it may induce people to listen to Sandy's work and want to know more about her. This is my attempt at Sandy's Wretched Wilbur - I find the words of this song very intriguing with some lovely images. As is often the case with her songs, there are some very unexpected melodic c...
A House Is Not A Motel - Love/Arthur Lee (cover)
Просмотров 8 тыс.11 лет назад
This is an attempt at Love's A House Is Not A Motel from the Album Forever Changes, 1967. It's not my favourite track but seems to work pretty well with the 12-string. I'm tuned a semi-tone down with the capo of the 1st fret so chords should be in concern pitch. Em, G, Am, C and D - I think there should be an A in the break but I coveniently forgot that. Hope you like it
The Hangman and the Papist - Strawbs (cover#2)
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.11 лет назад
This is a 12-string cover of The Strawbs The Hangman and the Papist, one of Dave Cousins classic songs. The chords are all Em G Am Em C repeated then Am to D, passing through a quick Em and a G in the bass again repeated. Hope you like it. How good it is to know that things have changed so much since these tiand that now we are all so tolerant of each other's religious beliefs, the colour of ou...
Leavin' Blues - Leadbelly, Davey Graham's arrangement (rough cover, always in-progress)
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.11 лет назад
My rough attempt at Davey Grahman's Version of Leavin' Blues, written by Leadbelly, or Huddie Ledbetter. Davey version is the opening track of his album Folk, Blues and Beyond, probably one of the cornerstones of what later was generally defined as Folk Baroque or the British folk revival. For those who are interested, the guitar is tuned to DADGAD slightly about concert pitch. The piece shows ...
Epitaph - King Crimson (cover)

The Great Silkie - trad./ arrangement by Dave Burland (12-string cover)
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.11 лет назад
Child Ballads N° 113. There are several versions of this song. I first heard it sung by Dave Burland on "Willin'" and this is my second attempt at his arrangement, this time with a 12-string. This version of the song is set to the tune by John Sinclair of Orkney. In my opinion, Dave is definitely one of the finest male traditional singers of the British Isles, along with Archie Fisher, Bob Fox ...
Box Of Love - Bert Jansch (rough tutorial/cover)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.11 лет назад
This is my second attempt at Box Of Love by Bert Jansch from the album Nicola. This time I've added a few playing tips and ideas, which I hope are of interest to any fans of Bert Jansch's playing. This arrangement, which I discovered quite recently, was worked out by Richard Dean Head. One of my favourite early Jansch songs. Capo 3. Chords are A (x02220 and 5xx65x), D, G, Gmaj7 (3x0432) and A M...
The Ferryman - Ralph McTell (cover#2)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.11 лет назад
This is my second attempt at Ralph McTell's The Ferryman. My apologises for the rather truncated ending but I tried to play a really easy cool chord and the end and really fluffed it. The original was on You Well-Meaning Brought Me Here which came out in around '71. Ralph has said somewhere that he wrote it after reading Hermann Hesse's Siddharta. It's another exmple of the quality of Ralph's b...

I'm sorry, sir- the CHORDS sounded pretty good, but THAT what's the most convoluted confusing, disconnected LESSON I've ever seen... I understand you've probably never tried to give a RUclips lesson before but you have to have a PLAN. You have to EITHER play the first verse THRU, THEN explain Loudly and Clearly enough, what the chords ARE, or Else, SPEAK the chords UP FRONT, or use Graphics... BUT, to just keep Stopping and Starting arbitrarily, Nobody knows Where you ARE, and can't HEAR you.. Sounds like you're mumbling.. I thought you were speaking German at first, haha. Sorry, constructive criticism!

I like your version. I had the good fortune to see Joe McDonald live in Aberdeen in Scotland. I think the line "Oh that I could with healing fare" uses one of the alternative meanings of the word fare simultaneously or maybe deliberately ambiguously. Whilst it is often used to refer to the price paid for a journey it also means produce, particularly food. It also means how one performs in a situation. I take it means that with restitution, i.e. giving up all his worldly goods and making good for what he has done he might enter heaven. I've seen "healing fare" being used to refer to what to eat after surgery so there are the opposite images of paying and consuming to improve "spiritual health" perhaps?

Heard your sung arrangement and really enjoyed it. It sounds like you got it really from John's quite late duet version with Jacqui, but it's very like what Bert plays on the Pentangle version from way back, but missing the interverse bit he does. John's on sitar on that version. Old Picker (aka Pierre le Bras) has a version which is more Bert. Remember very well seeing them do this at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon when I was in my teens! I'm pretty sure they did it again on the Finale tour, but honesly my memory fails me and I'm too idle to get the album out and check. John certainly played some sitar - I recall it was a struggle for him to sit on the floor. Fond memories of them both. Thanks a lot.

As far as I could research this is the real tune for this ballad. I learned it in 1956 from the singing of Cynthia Gooding. It is also the tune used by Ray Fisher for "Willie's Fatal Ride". The other more commonly used tune is actually "The Child of Vietnam" "I come and knock at every door is how it begins. Your singing and playing of it is beautiful. Oakland CA
